The Royal – Windermere The Royal – Windermere

A new development of 7 retail units and 16 apartments in the heart of the Lake District, on the site of the former Royal Hotel.

This award winning landmark development successfully combines a contemporary architectural style with traditional elements of the original building, providing a new focal point for the village.

The extensive use of glass makes the most of the views across the rooftops to the fells beyond. Many of the apartments have balconies. All have secure underground parking from which a lift provides access to the apartments above.

The Ferry House – Windermere The Ferry House – Windermere

This was the first project carried out under Applethwaite, the joint venture company set up between Robert Hughes Limited and The Eric Wright Group. This was the start of bigger things to come.

Originally built as a grand Victorian hotel sitting on a narrow strip of land projecting out into the water, this traditional Lakeland building was converted into thirteen exceptional apartments.

The larger windows take full advantage of the magnificent setting with views of the lake and fells in all directions from every apartment.

Windward – Windermere Windward – Windermere

Set along the waterfront at Windermere Marina, this highly successful new-build development consists of 38 houses and apartments, built in 2 phases. The complex construction process required special measures to be taken while working in such close proximity to the lake and some 400 boats. All the properties were fitted out in a contemporary style to a very high standard of specification, most with a terrace or balcony overlooking the boats on the Marina.

Hampsfield House – Lindale Hampsfield House – Lindale

This flagship development was an early benchmark for the quality of projects to follow. This careful conversion of an imposing Victorian gentleman’s residence, coach house and stables, together with the restoration of natural rock gardens, terraces, lawns and woodland, combined to create a unique and magical setting.

The 10 apartments varied in style, from grand traditional design in the principal wing, in keeping with the Victorian origins, to classic modern on the first floor, to contemporary ‘loft style’ penthouses.

The Walled Garden – Hampsfield The Walled Garden – Hampsfield

Situated in a private secluded setting overlooking the original walled garden, this 4 bedroom house is of modern angular design, yet reflects some elements of Arts and Craft architecture, such as the sweeping roof line and prominent chimney.

The striking form of the exterior is reflected in the contemporary design of the interior. Features include extensive use of oak, designer bathroom fittings, underfloor heating, Lutron lighting controls and multi-room audio/visual controls.

The Byres – Hartbarrow The Byres – Hartbarrow

Nestling on a hillside below an orchard, in the idyllic countryside of the Winster Valley, this represented a challenging conversion of a traditional Lakeland barn complex to form four individual dwellings. It required both vision and expertise to create meaningful living spaces from buildings originally designed for livestock not people. Original rustic character meets contemporary style.

The Chase – Bowland Bridge The Chase – Bowland Bridge

The Hare and Hounds sits at the heart of the secluded Winster Valley, a tranquil area of rolling hills, verdant fields and wooded slopes with uninterrupted views across to Whitbarrow Scar.

A range of buildings adjoining the historic inn was successfully converted into 8 homes. Inspiration was required to unravel the jumble of buildings and extensions. In addition, care had to be taken to minimise disruption to the revitalised restaurant and inn.
